  • Describe the differences between WMS and WFS with a focus on what is sent from server to client?
  • What advantages would you consider relevant when choosing WFS over WMS?
  • Can you identify any reasons for a possible preference for WMS?
  • WMS offers a broad choice of formats; can you name and compare three of these?
  • Create an image from any WMS service at https://demo.boundlessgeo.com/geoserver. Load it into a graphics software and fully describe its characteristics (format/type, resolution, depth, ...)
  • How are map projections controlled in WMS service requests?
  • Try to integrate the service framed with https://leafletjs.com/examples/wms/wms-example1.html into a website of your choice (eg a blog post)
  • Generate a suitable WFS response for a theme of your choice from https://demo.boundlessgeo.com/geoserver and display it in any desktop or web GIS product with a basemap backdrop.
  • When you have a choice between GeoJSON and shapefile as a WFS response, which one will you choose, and why?
  • Access a WMS and a WFS service from https://livingatlas.arcgis.com through a software of your choice, display a suitable extent and describe the relative merits of both protocols.
