Learning Outcomes
Completion requirements
Interoperability is a key concept facilitating linking across different (software) technologies. Without standardized communication between element in different architectures, data storage would be software-specific, visualisation would be tied to individual products and everyone would have to go through huge efforts of converting resources. Just imagine is web pages would need a specific browser depending on the type of web server used!
After this lesson, we will:
- understand the importance of standards for integrated web architectures, like in SDI,
- be aware of the role of standards organisations like OGC and ISO,
- appreciate the role of bodies like (the former) GSDI, ISDE and UN-GGIM,
- know where to find and how to 'read' standards specifications, and
- know about conformity certification re standards.
