Having checked the W3C website - how do the results from this consortium affect your daily work? Could you work with the Internet without standards?

After exploring the Esri white paper you've studied, answer these questions:

  • from the bullet list on page 1-2, the items 4-6 today are much more relevant than 1-3. Why do you think this is the case?
  • do geospatial standards differ by computer operating system or client device (desktop, tablet, mobile, ...)? Why / why not?
  • how do you describe 'open' standards, why are these important?
  • what main insight did you gain from this white paper? Anything you consider obsolete by now?

From what you have learned about the OGC:

  • what do you see as the main differences between a national standards organisation and the OGC?
  • can you briefly describe the development pathway for an OGC specification?
  • which of the OGC Implementation Specifications ('Standards') do you consider most relevant for your work? Why?
  • how can a vendor product's compliance with an OGC standard be verified?

How are the work of OGC and ISO related to each other? How do these two organisations outputs affect our work with geospatial technologies, and with SDI in particular?

Write down all your answers and explanations in the form of an essay.
